Design That Embraces the Passage of Time

In the ever-changing landscape of West Shimbashi and Uchisaiwaicho, where redevelopment projects constantly reshape the city, the Hibiya Central Building stands as an example of preserving and revitalizing an aging structure. Originally completed in 1983, this office building was recently renovated by architect Taiju Yamashita, who chose to honor its original character while adapting it for the present day.

The first-floor lobby, with its dignified and timeless presence, feels as if it has always existed just as it is. It welcomes a steady flow of people each day and offers a calm, inviting space for visitors to pause. One of its most striking features is the ceiling, where a pattern that blends grid shapes with graceful curves introduces a distinctive accent within the traditional space. Intricately interwoven metal details evoke the texture of finely woven fabric, while the French herringbone flooring, reminiscent of historic European interiors, adds warmth and a sense of craftsmanship.

At the building’s entrance, the original granite facade has been intentionally preserved as a nod to its history. Soft white marble has been added at key visual points to create a refined and timeless impression. The surrounding brickwork has also been left intact, while elements such as lighting, greenery, signage, and wayfinding have been carefully updated. The lighting, which shifts in tone between day and night, enhances both the building’s exterior presence and the ambiance within.

The Hibiya Central Building stands as a model for architectural renewal that embraces the passage of time rather than erasing it. By respecting its history and adding thoughtful updates, it is poised to remain a lasting and meaningful part of the city for years to come.
