Gifting “Design Social Responsibility” to the children of Cebu Island
To make society a better place through design. View our DSR (Design Social Responsibility) report.
The program didn’t end with the designer experience; after the workshop was done, the members of DRAFT and D-RAWRITE worked together on the next endeavor, which was recreating the children’s ideal room based on their designs and using virtual reality (VR). In this activity, we invited the children to the office to show the rooms they had designed through the world of virtual reality.
For this project, we created a realistic 3D model using the latest modelling techniques utilizing a new model 3D laser scanner and high-performance engineering software. We also used the Unreal Engine 4 game engine to recreate the rooms the children had designed, using VR that makes it feel like you are actually in the room.
A Designer Award
That Embrace Creative Confidence
The children’s families were also invited to the unveiling of the design on the last day of the event. A total of 80 people gathered at the venue, including teachers and families that had been looking forward to this day. The children freely presented their designs in their own style as the designers, and then each family had a chance to explore and experience the VR rooms. This was the first VR experience for almost all of the participants, so there were loud cheers of excitement every time an image was projected onto the screen.
At the end of the event, we presented a Designer Award for each design. Having your design assessed and awarded by a third party is a wonderful chance for children gain creative confidence. We ran this unique experience with our wish for the children to have a taste of how exciting creative work can be. We received plenty of positive feedback from the children who designed the rooms, as well as from their families and teachers, such as “this was a once in a lifetime experience” and “I want to be a designer in the future.”
