An Office Design That Promotes Internal Communication

Design agency, “TAKI corporation” has its offices in the Tsukiji Hamarikyu Building. The company’s expansion to multiple floors was the trigger for the redesign of all the floors, including the existing one.

The challenge was to maintain a sense of cohesion as a single company, even with its offices spanning multiple floors. Therefore, they required an office design with sense of unity throughout all the floors.

The answer to this challenge was to provide communication spaces on the 13th floors. We placed office areas on each side of the long, narrow floor and in the center created spaces for employees to meet and relax. In these spaces, furniture such as box seats and sofas allow people to freely choose a spot to spend some time. Making the space open encourages use by employees who work on other floors, with the aim of reinforcing internal connections.

The way the central areas are used varies from floor to floor. While the functionality was tailored to the particular department, every floor shares design tones based around white and wood materials, and we were conscious of maintaining the overall unity of the office. The layout allows visitors to see the entire office from the entrance, which boosts the sense of anticipation, and makes a strong impression.

Maizuru red-brick warehouse was built by the Imperial Japanese Navy as a naval armory in Kyoto in 1903. The Japanese government designated it as national cultural properties and renovated to Maizuru Red Brick Park, which includes shops, cafes, and a museum in 2012.
