A New Focal Point for Vibrancy and Community in Rinko Park

Set in Rinko Park, Minato Mirai 21’s largest green space and a lush waterfront retreat facing Yokohama Bay, Yokohama Timber Wharf will become a new cultural and recreational hub. The park, known for its scenic seaside promenade and vast open lawns, is a popular destination for families, joggers, and visitors seeking relaxation. This new multi-purpose facility, featuring a cafe and outdoor activity support amenities, is being developed to enhance visitor engagement and encourage greater flow throughout Yokohama’s coastal city center. Spearheaded by DRAFT as the lead developer, with architectural design by Taiju Yamashita Design and Architecture, the project is scheduled to open in October 2025.

Architecture That Harmonizes with Nature

Yokohama Timber Wharf is designed to harmonize with the seasonal beauty and greenery of Rinko Park. The architecture, envisioned by Taiju Yamashita, features a striking timber facade structured in a bold truss formation. Warm natural materials and dynamic geometry make the building stand out, while full-height glass walls behind the timber allow uninterrupted views of the surrounding park and bay. The open design fosters a seamless connection between the park and the building, creating an inviting space where people naturally gather. It’s a place where architecture, nature, and daily life blend which offers an experience rooted in openness, continuity, and community. The aim is for the facility to become a beloved local landmark, enriching the lives of both residents and visitors for years to come.

A Future-Focused Design Built for Sustainability

With growing attention on carbon neutrality, Yokohama Timber Wharf actively incorporates renewable timber as part of its commitment to sustainable building practices. The building’s distinctive truss columns are made from wood-steel hybrid laminated timber, a structural material that combines the strength of wood and steel to ensure fire resistance and long-term durability. This innovative mix of bold design and environmental responsibility positions the facility as a symbol of sustainable urban development, highlighting the potential of wood as a key material for future cities.

Designed by Taiju Yamashita

The project is led by architect and designer Taiju Yamashita, founder of DRAFT and Taiju Yamashita Design and Architecture.

Taiju Yamashita
Born in 1981 in Tokyo, Taiju Yamashita established DRAFT in 2008. He is an architect and designer renowned for his work in interior and architectural design, spanning from urban environments to furniture creation. Under the belief that spaces should be designed with people at the core, he continuously redefines and redesigns urban, architectural, and spatial environments. Taiju has received numerous awards, including the Best of Year Awards and SBID Awards.

Facilities Overview

1F: Bakery Cafe
On the ground floor, a bakery cafe with a live open kitchen will open, offering freshly baked bread and coffee. With items from the cafe in hand, visitors can enjoy various activities in the park's green spaces. A spacious terrace connects seamlessly to the park, fostering spontaneous interaction and relaxation. It’s a casual and welcoming place where people and place come together naturally.


2F–3F: Restaurant (Wedding) & Outdoor Recreation Support
A restaurant and wedding venue will open on the second and third floors, offering beautifully crafted dishes and a thoughtfully designed space where guests can fully take in the lush greenery of Rinko Park and the stunning ocean views. _Additionally, the space will include a lounge, changing rooms, and baggage storage for runners, walkers, and other outdoor enthusiasts that supports wellness and recreation in the park.

Activating the Park with Year-Round Events

Yokohama Timber Wharf will serve as a launchpad for seasonal and year-round events that bring Rinko Park to life. Plans include outdoor activities, food and art festivals, and community gatherings. By collaborating with existing local events, the facility will help foster a more dynamic and inclusive use of public space.
